Linguaphone: This is the main product that I use day to day and I have to say that I think it is very good. It is set out very clearly and in a logical and methodical way, starting off with how to say hello, all the way up to religious and political debates! It consists of 4 books (Texts of the spoken passages; Oral Questions; Written Questions; and a Handbook which describes the words, sentences, grammar, and tenses of each section; and 9 cassettes/CD's.) If you seriously want to learn Swedish, or any other language, I highly recommend this product. Cost: Bit pricey, but well worth it - £280 (though they often do sales with good discounts).
Rosetta Stone: I used this more as a recreational supplementary to my Swedish learning. It uses a different approach in teaching than Linguaphone do in that it tends towards teaching you a second language in much the same way you learnt your native language when you were a small child. It shows pictures of various objects or people doing various things and then gives the Swedish translation below. There is no English text or explanation, though it does come with a booklet of the texts of spoken exercises. The exercises consist of five main parts: Listening & Reading; Listening; Reading; Speaking; Writing. The problem that I have with this method is that as it contains no English it relies on you being able to work out what the pictures represent, and more importantly it does not attempt to explain grammar or why certain things about the language are the way they are. Cost: Cheaper than Linguaphone: £140.
